A LITTLE BACKGROUND

A LITTLE BACKGROUND

Before going on to more history, a little bit about me and how the Youngers made it to Sorrento.

Dodie, Dana Sam, Stephen, Judy & George

George & Dodie Younger were first invited to Sorrento by their friends the Todds in the Summer of 1958.  At the time the Todds shared a little log cabin with the Webbers on the road to Doane's Point.  The three families - husbands and wives - were ministers serving inner-city parishes in NYC.  The Youngers and Todds were friends from Yale Divinity School and the Todds and Webbers served together at the East Harlem Protestant Parish.

The Webbers had been introduced to Sorrento by one of Bill Webber's mentors, Dr. Henry Pitney (“Pit”) Van Dusen, the president of Union Theological Seminary in NYC.

Our mother loved to retell the story of arriving in Sorrento for the very first time before dawn, after a long drive up Rt. 1 with three young children, and asking our father why he had brought her to the end of the world. But as the sun rose over Prebble Island, she decided to try to make the best of a vacation with one baby in diapers in a house with no running water or electricity.  The two families did end up having a wonderful vacation that year and would return the following year as well.

In 1960 my parents were lucky to be able to purchase a one-acre lot on Doane's Point from Alexandra Ewing Stone.  They next hired local contactor, Clif Hale, to build a small cabin that could be ready for the Summer of 1961.  Clif was given a home-made plan my father had based on an Acorn Deck House post-and-beam prefab cabin and a strict budget.  George & Dodie also decided to undertake one additional project that year and had one more son - me.

Our family returned to the newly completed Sorrento cabin in the Summer of 1962 and every year thereafter to enjoy time with our families, the salt air, boating, tennis, golf, blueberries, and friendships.
